Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) has a vacancy in the Algorithms and Complexity (A&C) research group for a talented

PhD student,

on the subject of connections between theoretical computer science and mathematics.

Job description This is a research position, supervised by dr. Jop Briët. Broadly, the project involves establishing and exploiting connections between theoretical computer science (TCS), discrete mathematics and high-dimensional geometry. Possible topics from TCS include (but are not limited to) quantum information theory, the theory of error-correcting codes, and approximation algorithms. Possible topics from mathematics include (but are not limited to) the geometry of tensor products, high-dimensional probability, analysis over the Boolean cube, additive combinatorics or the polynomial method.

The successful candidate will join CWI’s Algorithms & Complexity group (led by Prof. Harry Buhrman) and will automatically also be part of the Networks Center ( and QuSoft (

Requirements Candidates are required to have a Master’s degree in mathematics and/or computer science, and be interested in at least one of the topics from both of the areas listed in the job description. Preferable qualifications for candidates include proven research talent, an excellent command of English, and good academic writing and presentation skills.

Terms and conditions PhD Student The terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Research Centres ("CAO-onderzoeksinstellingen"). The initial labour agreement will be for a period of 18 months. After a positive evaluation, the agreement will extended by 30 months. The gross monthly salary, for a PhD student on a full time basis, is €2,211 during the first year and increases to €2,834 over the four year period. Employees are also entitled to a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary and a year-end bonus of 8.33%. CWI offers attractive working conditions, including flexible scheduling and help with housing for expat employees.
