Position Description:

Assistant Professor of Statistics, Middlebury College, Middlebury, Vermont.

The Middlebury College Department of Mathematics and Statistics invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor of statistics to begin in fall 2024. A PhD in statistics, data science, or a closely related field should normally be in hand by the time of appointment. Successful candidates will teach undergraduate courses at all levels—including the senior capstone seminar, the four-week winter term, and the first-year seminar program—and will contribute to advising and mentoring.

This addition to our faculty reflects the robust and growing interest in statistics and data science, both within our department and across the campus. Last spring the College approved a major in statistics, and in Spring 2024 we will celebrate our first statistics graduates. The new hire will contribute to expanding and shaping the departmental curriculum. Interdisciplinary collaborations are also available and encouraged by working in partnership with the midd.data initiative (https://www.middlebury.edu/midddata), which is a point of focus for the College's strategic vision. Candidates are invited to share how their interests and expertise can contribute to these programs.

Middlebury College is a top-tier liberal arts college with a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and research and where diversity, equity, and inclusion are core values. We are committed to hiring a broadly representative faculty to foster innovation in our curriculum and provide a rich educational experience to our increasingly diverse student body. Middlebury College encourages applications from women, people of color, people with disabilities, and members of other protected classes and historically underrepresented communities. The College also seeks applications from individuals who demonstrate an ongoing commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.

Applications should be submitted via Interfolio at http://apply.interfolio.com/127393. Please submit (1) a letter of application; (2) a teaching statement that includes your vision for statistics and data science education in a liberal arts setting; (3) a description of your research program, including ways in which you might incorporate undergraduate students; (4) a curriculum vitae; (5) a graduate transcript; and (6) three letters of recommendation, at least two of which speak to teaching ability. At Middlebury, we strive to make our campus a respectful, engaged community that embraces difference, with all the complexity and individuality each person brings. Please include (7) a separate statement that discusses how your teaching, scholarship, mentorship, and/or community service might support our commitment to diversity and inclusion. Questions about the application process or the position can be directed to Steve Abbott (Department Chair), abbott@middlebury.edu.

Review of applications will begin on Sunday, October 1, 2023 and continue until the position is filled. Offers of employment are contingent on completion of a background check. Information on our background check policy can be found at http://go.middlebury.edu/backgroundchecks.
