Detailed Job Description
The School of Mathematical Sciences (SMS) at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) invites applications for one or more tenure-track positions at the Assistant Professor level starting in August 2019. Preference will be given to applications in the areas of industrial applied mathematics and mathematics of planet Earth, but other areas of mathematics that complement existing research groups will be considered. The School of Mathematical Sciences has research groups in the areas of biomedical modeling, computational relativity and gravitation, data science, dynamical systems, fluid dynamics, and inverse problems.

Responsibilities include research, teaching, and service to the School of Mathematical Sciences, the College of Science, and RIT. The successful candidate will be expected to advise students in and support the growth of the Mathematical Modeling Ph.D. program, advise undergraduate and graduate students in other School of Mathematical Sciences' programs, teach courses in the graduate and undergraduate programs of the School of Mathematical Sciences, and develop a research program that receives external funding. Successful applicants will demonstrate outstanding research potential complementing existing research groups, a commitment to obtaining external grants to support research, an enthusiasm for teaching and engaging undergraduate and graduate students in mathematical sciences, and a dedication to furthering the mission of the School, College, and Institute.

Department/College Description
The RIT College of Science consists of six academic units including the School of Mathematical Sciences (SMS). The SMS is comprised of 73 full-time Faculty and approximately 181 full-time students in our undergraduate programs. The three undergraduate programs include Applied Mathematics, Computational Mathematics and Applied Statistics and Actuarial Sciences. There are 126 graduate students in our two Masters programs in Applied and Computational Mathematics and Applied Statistics and 8 Ph.D. students in Mathematical Modeling. SMS is known for the high-quality education it provides to its students, its innovative approaches to teaching and learning, and its excellent research and expertise in target areas.

Required Minimum Qualifications
  • A PhD. or an equivalent degree in mathematics, applied mathematics, or a related field completed by the date of appointment.
  • Post-doctoral research or professional experience.
  • Ability to communicate in English.
  • Potential to collaborate with SMS and other RIT faculty members.
  • An ongoing record of peer-reviewed publications.
  • A commitment to obtaining external grants to support research.
  • A commitment to undergraduate and graduate education.
  • A commitment to mentoring graduate and undergraduate students in research.
  • Ability to contribute to the college's continuing commitment to cultural diversity, pluralism, and individual differences.
