Postdoctoral Fellow 
Quantitative Biology and Medicine Lab 

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Waterloo, with a flexible start date. The successful candidate will work with the Quantitative Biology and Medicine group, in a dynamic and vibrant computational lab with a proven track record of outstanding achievements.

We are looking for someone who: 
  • Has a Ph.D. in computer science, mathematics, statistics, computer engineering, or a related discipline 
  • Most importantly, highly skilled in programming, including Matlab, Python, and R
  • Has relevant research experience with a proven publication record
Primary duties: 
  • Manage interdisciplinary collaborations and projects 
  • Develop complex computational models (outstanding programming skills required) to better understand complex biological processes, including diabetes, hypertension and ageing 
  • Perform statistical analysis 
  • Lead the publication of study findings 
  • Work with undergraduate and graduate research assistants
Potential projects include: 
  • Multiscale modeling to understand the effect of aging on kidney function 
  • Multiscale modeling to understand the race differences in the development of hypertension and response to treatments 
  • Virtual patient platform for assessing drug efficacy and side effects in different patient cohorts, including pregnant women and children
Skills and experience to enable success: 
  • Curiosity about science, health and disease 
  • Passion about learning and professional growth 
  • Excellent technical writing skills and experience
  • Proficiency in machine learning and the use of statistical software 
  • Working knowledge of cell biology and physiology, sufficient to dig through biological and clinical literature for elusive data 
  • Creativity, the ability to think outside the box 
  • Willingness to work hard and strong drive to excel
