Job Summary

The Department of Mathematics at
Xavier University of Louisiana invites applicants for a tenure-track position
at the assistant professor level beginning August 2021. The ideal candidate
will have a Ph.D. in statistics. The
Department of Mathematics at Xavier offers majors in mathematics, statistics,
and mathematics education.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate the potential
for excellence in teaching and research with undergraduate students. Teaching
responsibilities include statistics and/or all
levels of mathematics courses. The successful candidate will
teach approximately 12 credit hours each semester, for a total of at least 24
credit hours per academic year. This could include interdisciplinary teaching
opportunities in related programs such as Data Science. Applications are encouraged
from applicants with a strong background in any current or emerging areas of
statistics. The
department is particularly interested in candidates who have experience
working with students from diverse backgrounds, minimizing barriers, and
increasing equity and completion rates between members of different
demographic groups.
Duties:
· Teach undergraduate statistics
and mathematics courses at all levels. Mode of instruction may include in-person, hybrid,
remote, and/or any combination thereof.
· Advise undergraduate majors in the department
· Mentor undergraduate students in scholarly projects
· Engage in research
· Contribute to the operation and growth of the existing
Statistics program.
· Participate in service activities for the department,
university, and community.

Job Requirements
|
Required Qualifications:
·
Ph.D.
in Statistics (conferred by the time of
appointment).
· Strong commitment to teaching a fulltime load of 24 credit
hours per academic year
· Ability
to develop and teach face-to-face as well as online classes
· Demonstrate
a strong potential for excellence in teaching and mentoring undergraduate
students are essential.
· Conduct ongoing, independent research resulting in
scholarly publications or successful grant proposals.
· Mentorship
and advising of HBCU students leading
to readiness for graduate school and the workforce.
· Ability and
willingness to work collegially.
· Commitment to
working successfully with a diverse student population.
· Commitment
to the mission of Xavier University of Louisiana.

About our Department and the Position
The
Department of Mathematics at Xavier University of Louisiana values teaching
and research as essential components of education. The department shares the University’s
mission and supports it by preparing students to create a more just and
humane society through careers in actuarial
science, banking, engineering, medicine, law, and teaching, among many
others. The Department of Mathematics offers
undergraduate instruction for three mathematics program tracks, namely a BS
in math, a BS in math education, and a BS in statistics. In addition, the math department offers a
3+2 joint program with Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center
(LSUHSC), where a student will get a BS degree in statistics from Xavier
University and a master’s degree in biostatistics from LSUHSC in only 5
years. Xavier University's Mathematics Department offers varied
options in coursework and major areas of study which are designed to give the
student a sound foundation in the Mathematical Sciences. Faculty members
engage in ongoing mentorship and research to prepare each student to achieve
the individualized goals they establish; especially preparing them for
graduate school and good job opportunities. The mathematics department has a
good track record of placing their graduates in prominent graduate schools,
where most of them have completed their Ph.D.’s successfully.
