Position Description:    

The Department of Mathematical Sciences at High Point University has 14 full-time faculty positions, and offers undergraduate degrees in Mathematical Sciences, Actuarial Science, Data Analytics and Statistics, and Mathematical Economics. We seek a dynamic and experienced candidate that can help grow the department, and work with other departments to support their needs. The department provides support for the general education of all students through general education mathematics requirements, to other programs such as Electrical and Computer Engineering, Physics and Education through core, foundational courses upon which those disciplines build, and to students pursuing one of the majors offered in the department. Preference will be given to candidates that are able to show the value of mathematics to each of these various student groups. 

 The Chair will supervise and evaluate the Mathematical Sciences faculty; manage departmental budget; teach classes in Mathematics and/or Statistics; provide leadership in the instructional program and in curricula innovation directed toward growing participation in the degree programs offered; provide leadership for internal and external program reviews; maintain an aggressive recruitment and retention program; and other responsibilities as determined in consultation with the Dean of Engineering. 

 Qualifications:
  • Candidates must have an earned doctorate in Mathematics, Actuarial Science, Data Analytics, Statistics, or a closely related field from a regionally accredited U.S. university or comparable non-U.S. university. 
  • Candidates with relevant industry experience are encouraged to apply. 
  • Proven record of successful teaching and curriculum development. 
  • Creativity and academic integrity. 
  • Evidence of significant scholarly and creative endeavors. 
  • A strong commitment to and concern for student academic achievement and retention. 
  • Excellent technical, organizational, interpersonal, oral and written skills. 
  • An ability to lead the faculty and the department with vision. 
  • Pursuit of an active research agenda in their field. 
  • Experience with supporting various populations.
  • Demonstrated commitment to academic excellence, and evidence of strong interpersonal and administrative skills. • Demonstrated success and increasing responsibility in administrative roles. 
  • Some evening and/or weekend engagement with students is required. 
  • While all areas of specialty within these fields are desirable, of particular interest are Mathematics with an applied focus, and Statistics.
Responsibilities: 
  • Responsibilities include teaching and mentoring (advising) students from various backgrounds and disciplines and guiding mentees as they pursue degree programs.
  • Engagement in an active research agenda and ongoing service to the university are also expected.

The successful candidate should have demonstrated promise of excellence in teaching, a record of scholarly achievement, an entrepreneurial spirit and an interest in working with highly motivated undergraduate students. The rank for the position is open and the successful applicant should be able to work with all constituents. The success of our undergraduate students is our primary focus.
