Nature of Position: Tenure Track

Description: The Department of Mathematics welcomes applicants for a Tenure Track Assistant Professor position beginning August 2023. Responsibilities include teaching, advising students, scholarly work and department and university service. Actual assignments will depend upon department needs and may include courses offered in the day, evening and/or weekend, and online. The department, housed in Wickersham Hall, is comprised of sixteen full-time faculty members, one regular part-time faculty member, and one support staff member. Faculty will have the opportunity to teach courses offered by the Department as part of the University’s General Education Program. Classes should be conducted through multifaceted teaching strategies for face-to- face classroom delivery and/or web-enhanced or web-based formats. Faculty are expected, per the Collective Bargaining Agreement Article 4, to engage in professional responsibilities such as curriculum development and update, learning outcomes assessment for courses and programs, and participating in department, college and university meetings and workshops. There is also an expectation for faculty to mentor undergraduate students in scholarly research and to establish a robust and sustainable research agenda that leads to peer-reviewed scholarly outputs appropriate for the discipline. Faculty routinely advise and mentor students in other high-impact practices, as appropriate.

Required: ABD, with Ph.D. in Statistics completed by the date of appointment; Broad academic record/training in Mathematics and Statistics; Must exhibit evidence of strong commitment to excellence in teaching (supported by at least two current letters of recommendation attesting to recent teaching effectiveness); Preparation and/or experience in teaching statistics courses; Evidence of capacity/potential for continued scholarly activity; Must be interested in involving undergraduate students in research; Commitment to working with students from diverse backgrounds; Evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; Successful interview; Successful teaching demonstration; Successful presentation of proposed research agenda; Successful completion of three background checks.

Preferred: Demonstrated commitment to scholarly activity in statistics; Potential for service or contributing to the department’s programs; Expertise in an area of focus, such as data science, actuarial science, linear models, multivariate analysis, nonparametrics, experience in statistical consulting, or post-doctoral research experience in statistics; Expertise in statistical software packages (e.g., R, SAS, Minitab, Python).
