As part of the University of South Carolina (UofSC) Excellence Initiative, the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics and Big Data Health Science Center (BDHSC) in the Arnold School of Public Health (ASPH) invite applications for a nine-month tenure-track position in Biostatistics at the rank of Associate Professor. The successful applicant will have: an earned doctoral degree in biostatistics, statistics or closely related field with demonstrated evidence of high-quality scholarly research in developing data analytics; a successful track record of competitive external funding in support of research; at least 5 years of university-level teaching and/or research experience by the beginning of employment; and expertise in data science (i.e., big data analytics including data mining, pattern analysis, classification, machine learning, high dimensional data analysis, and integrated data analysis with applications in epidemiology, public health, and genetics). Applicants with expertise in electronic health data from a variety of systems (e.g., the Department of Defense (DOD), Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services administrative claims), bioinformatic data, genomic data or geospatial data are particularly encouraged to apply; however, candidates from all areas of data science in public health will be considered. The successful applicant will be expected to maintain an active independent methodological research program, engage in multidisciplinary collaborative research in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics and BDHSC, teach biostatistics courses to students in biostatistics, epidemiology and other fields, mentor graduate students, and contribute to the department, BDHSC and school through professional service.

UofSC is a comprehensive Carnegie University of High Research Activity and Community Engagement. Located in the capital city of Columbia, UofSC has five Health Science Units in addition to ASPH: 1) School of Medicine in Columbia 2) School of Medicine in Greenville, 3) College of Nursing, 4) College of Pharmacy, and 5) College of Social Work.

The ASPH, founded in 1975, is the second largest school of public health nationally among public universities in terms of overall enrollment. The ASPH consists of six departments and several research centers that address topics such as disease prevention, nutrition and physical activity, cancer, health services and policy, rural health, HIV/AIDS, aging, and health disparities.

The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics is home to 31 faculty members, 20 in the Division of Epidemiology and 11 in the Division of Biostatistics. The faculty’s robust research portfolio includes funding from a broad spectrum of federal agencies (e.g., NIH and CDC) and non-profit organizations. The department has a rich tradition of producing outstanding trainees. Currently 89 students are enrolled in our master’s and doctoral degree programs. The department, school, and university provide a strong collaborative environment for interdisciplinary team science across the public health research continuum. The Big Data Health Science Center (BDHSC) was funded by the UofSC Excellence Initiative in 2019. The BDHSC will serve as a campus-wide interdisciplinary enterprise that conducts leading edge research and discovery, offers professional development and academic training, and provides service to the community and industry. There are five content cores in the BDHSC (electronic health core, genomic core, bio-nanomaterials core, geospatial core, and social media core) with the participation of more than 40 faculty members across 19 departments and 10 colleges at UofSC.
