POSITION DESCRIPTION The Department of Statistics, in the Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society at the University of California, Berkeley is consistently ranked as one of the two premier programs in Statistics nationally. Since the inception of the Department in 1955, graduates and faculty of Berkeley have shaped the foundations and applications of Statistics. Past faculty in the Berkeley Statistics Department include such luminaries as David Blackwell, Leo Breiman, David Freedman, Lucien Le Cam, and Erich Lehmann. The Department currently has over 30 active research faculty, four of whom are members of the National Academy of Sciences.

The Department of Statistics at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor position (Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employment, LPSOE), in Probability, Statistics, and Data Science. The primary duties and responsibilities of an appointee to the position are teaching, pedagogical innovation, and academic program development. Secondary responsibilities are professional and/or scholarly achievement and creative activity, including those related to instruction and pedagogy. Therefore, it is expected that the appointee demonstrate teaching excellence and pedagogically innovative techniques both in the classroom and in professional and scholarly activities. Furthermore, the appointee will be expected to demonstrate equitable and inclusive teaching practices, such as those described on the website for the Center for Teaching & Learning (https://teaching.berkeley.edu/resources/promoting-equitable-and-inclusive-learning-environment). This position has the possibility of security of employment (equivalent to tenure).

QUALIFICATIONS Basic qualifications (required at time of application) PhD (or equivalent international degree) or enrolled in a PhD-granting program (or equivalent international program) at the time of application.

Preferred qualifications The successful candidate for an Assistant Teaching Professor position will preferably finish their PhD or equivalent degree within one year of their appointment’s expected start date. Applicants are expected to have demonstrated teaching and research potential. Serious consideration will be given to the candidate’s potential for pedagogical innovation, record in teaching at the undergraduate level, and potential for effective leadership. Serious consideration will be given to professional service, including service promoting access to and diversity in higher education and the academic profession.
