The University of Manitoba I.H. Asper School of Business Warren Centre for Actuarial Studies and Research ASSISTANT, ASSOCIATE or FULL PROFESSOR in ACTUARIAL STUDIES – POSITION # 30850

Applications are invited for a probationary (tenure-track) position in the Warren Centre for Actuarial Studies and Research in the I.H. Asper School of Business at the University of Manitoba. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor. The appointment start date is July 1, 2024, or soon thereafter. Salary, which is market competitive, and rank are commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The Warren Centre offers undergraduate programs leading to either a B.Comm. (Hons) or a B.Sc. (Hons) degree and an M.Sc. program in Actuarial Mathematics. The successful candidate may supervise PhD students through the University’s interdisciplinary PhD program. The Warren Centre is one of the oldest centres of actuarial education in North America with actuarial courses being offered since 1912. Over 700 graduates have become either Associates or Fellows of the Society of Actuaries (SOA), Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS), or Canadian Institute of Actuaries (CIA). The Warren Centre has been recognized as a Center of Actuarial Excellence by SOA since 2009 and accredited by CIA under its University Accreditation Program since 2011.

Applicants must possess a PhD or near completion of a PhD in actuarial science, statistics, or a related field. A successful candidate who is close to completion of their Ph.D. may be appointed to a term position at the rank of Lecturer until successful completion of their degree, at which time they will convert to a probationary (tenure-track) appointment as an Assistant Professor. Candidates must have a demonstrated interest and experience with actuarial education and research. The successful candidate should have a successful track record of high-quality scholarly research in actuarial science and demonstrated potential to establish an independent and externally fundable research program. At the Assistant Professor rank, candidates must display a promising research agenda and success in teaching. At the Associate Professor rank, candidates must have a strong research orientation, a demonstrated record of high-quality publications and successful experience in academic teaching. At the Professor rank, candidates must demonstrate leadership in research, an excellent record of high-quality publications and successful experience in academic teaching.

We are seeking candidates who are enthusiastic about teaching talented undergraduates and graduates and helping them prepare for actuarial careers. Preference will be given to applicants with an actuarial credential from SOA, CAS, or CIA. The selected candidate will also be expected to supervise research at all levels, contribute to the development and evolution of courses and programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and assist with the actuarial accreditation, as needed. Service contribution to the Warren Centre, the Asper School and the larger community is expected. Substantial start-up research funding is provided for new faculty members as is a fully paid six-month research/study leave after three years.
