ILLINOIS STATE UNIVERSITY DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS/MATHEMATICAL MODELING POSITION

The Mathematics Department at Illinois State University is seeking applications for one tenure-track position in Differential Equations or Mathematical Modeling to begin August 16, 2024. This position will work closely with faculty in Mathematics to support the Department’s expected service role to the new College of Engineering at Illinois State University. Qualifications: Applicants need to have, or anticipate having, a conferred Ph.D. degree in Mathematics by August 16, 2024. State law mandates demonstrable oral proficiency in English as a requirement for this position.

Responsibilities: Duties include teaching courses for major and general departmental programs (typically two courses per semester), research, and service. Refereed research publications, quality teaching, and professional involvement and service are required for promotion and tenure. The successful candidate will be expected to teach a wide range of courses and show a strong commitment to quality teaching. In addition, they will be regularly engaged in the Engineering Calculus curriculum, through teaching and ongoing curricular development. Rank and Salary. The rank is at the Assistant Professor level. Salary is commensurate with qualification and experience.

Department and Programs: The Mathematics Department is in the College of Arts and Sciences and has over 30 tenure-track lines. It offers Bachelor’s and Master's degrees in mathematics and a Ph.D. degree in mathematics education. Within the bachelor's program (about 300 majors), there are sequences in actuarial science, data science and computational mathematics, mathematics, mathematics education, statistics, and a 5-year accelerated BS/MS program in mathematics. The Master’s program serves approximately 60 students and offers specializations in actuarial science, biomathematics, mathematics education, pure and computational mathematics, and statistics. The department also provides numerous service and general education mathematics courses.

The Mathematics Department has diverse research groups in Actuarial Science, Algebra, Biomathematics, Data Science and Computational Mathematics, Discrete Mathematics, Mathematics Education, and Statistics.
