Full-time, four year fixed-term appointment with base salary Level B $113,184 p.a. - $134,403 p.a. + 17% superannuation

About the opportunity

The School of Mathematics and Statistics is one of the largest mathematical sciences schools in Australia and is world-renowned for its research in pure mathematics, applied mathematics and mathematical statistics. The school attracts a strong body of excellent students as well as a large number of outstanding researchers, many of whom hold Fellowships and grants.

We are welcoming applications from candidates who have a strong research background in the field of algebra. Of particular interest is expertise in the following areas:

representation theory, for instance of affine group schemes or Lie (super) algebras

algebraic geometry and non-commutative geometry

category theory, for instance monodical categories.

We are looking for a candidate who has the potential to establish relationships with key academic, industry and professional institutions, partners and stakeholders that can be leveraged to enhance the standing of the specialty, school, faculty and University. If appointed, you will be expected to undertake duties consistent with an appointment at the lecturer level (Level B) on the Australian academic scale. This will include: publishing scholarly papers in international peer-reviewed journals and presenting at conferences; supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students; teaching a range of courses to undergraduate students; and applying for external funding.

NOTE: This is a regular 40:40:20 position and will contribute to the pure mathematics research programs.

About you

a PhD in a relevant area and demonstrated evidence of independent research ability and potential in an area of algebra

evidence of ability, versatility and commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching

experience in online teaching and curriculum development that will contribute to the undergraduate major in mathematics. Including coordinating its development, implementation, and the associated Units of Study

an independent and active research line in algebra, compatible with the high standards and aspirations of our school and University

demonstrated understanding of the incorporation into University life of the principles of Equal Employment Opportunity and Affirmative Action; and ability to work positively with staff and students from a diverse range of backgrounds.

Evidence of administration and course coordination within a university environment and the ability to apply for competitive research funding would be highly desirable.
