Job Summary

The position is funded by the Met Office and will involve the development and evaluation of parallel-in-time algorithms for numerical weather prediction.

Duties and Responsibilities

The project will involve (1) developing high performance parallel code for the parallel-in-time method based around Firedrake (an automated system for the solution of partial differential equations using the finite element method) and the associated asQ library for handling parallel-in-time-algorithms, and (2) benchmarking and evaluating the proposed methods using the code. The candidate will be expected to interact and collaborate with our collaborators at the University of Exeter, and to work towards deliverable deadlines that are monitored by the Met Office, as part of the ExCALIBUR project.

Essential Requirements

The essential requirements for this post are as follows:

• The successful candidate will hold a PhD (or equivalent level of professional qualifications and/or experience) in computational mathematics/science/engineering or a closely related discipline. • Knowledge of numerical methods for the solution of PDEs • Experience of scientific software development • Ability to carry out original research and to produce published research papers • Ability to identify, develop and apply new concepts, techniques and methods • Ability to keep accurate records of research results and activity • Ability to keep to delivery deadlines • Ability to interact in an interdisciplinary environment that includes mathematicians, engineers and other scientists

Further Information

The position is full-time and fixed term for 26 months. The expected start date is 1 April 2022 or soon thereafter.

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range, £36,694- £39,888 per annum.
