As part of the Faculty of Science, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics of the University of Helsinki is the biggest university department of mathematical sciences in Finland. The department hosts four current ERC grants of the European Research Council and two Centres of Excellence of the Academy of Finland.


The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the Faculty of Science of the University of Helsinki invites applications for an

ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OR PROFESSOR OF MATHEMATICS

The research area of the position is mathematical analysis in a wide sense, including in particular geometric and harmonic analysis, partial differential equations, analytic number theory, probability and mathematical physics. We are looking for an enthusiastic, energetic researcher with a track record of independent research that connects to one or several of the broad research themes of the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Randomness and Structures. A successful candidate should show evidence of potential to research leadership in some of these areas. A capacity to bridge and enhance connections between several of the said themes is considered an additional strength.

In this call, preference will be given to assistant/associate level recruitments but well-motivated applications at the full professor level will also be considered. Women and other underrepresented groups in the field of mathematics are specifically encouraged to apply.

In addition to conducting research and teaching at different levels (graduate and undergraduate), the appointee is expected to take advantage of national and international research funding opportunities, and participate in doctoral education at the Department, in relevant administrative functions in the university community, and in the interaction between science and society at large. The teaching area of the position is mathematics in general, and the applicant’s capacity and willingness to contribute to diverse teaching needs of the Department is considered in the evaluation.

Qualifications

Candidates must have a doctoral degree in mathematics or in some other appropriate field. Excellent academic qualifications, international collaboration, and evidence of the capability of leading an independent research group are expected. The candidates must also be able to provide research-based teaching of high quality, supervise dissertations and theses, and participate in the development of curriculum at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must be fluent in English.

The successful applicant may be appointed to a permanent full professorship or a fixed-term assistant/ associate professorship (tenure track), depending on their qualifications and career stage. When assessing the qualifications of candidates, attention will be paid to scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, participation in doctoral education, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce teaching materials, and other teaching merits. Teaching skills will be demonstrated in a lecture as part of the interview process. Furthermore, attention will be paid to candidates’ activities within the research community, success in attracting research funding, research work abroad, and elected positions / positions of responsibility in academia.

Salary and benefits

The University will offer the appointee an attractive career opportunity in top-level research and research-based teaching, possibilities for international collaboration, and prerequisites to grow into full professorship. The contracts for assistant and associate professors have a fixed term of 3–5 years, towards the end of which an evaluation is made concerning possible promotion to the next level. Assuming a successful evaluation at the end of the associate professorship, a promotion to full professorship is made.

The annual gross salary for an assistant/associate professor typically amounts to 60,000–74,000 euros and for professor to 75,000–92,000 euros. The selected person will also get a startup package of about 160 000 EUR.
