You are expected to have an MSc degree (or equivalent) in mathematics, or to obtain such a degree before the starting date of the PhD project. A working proficiency in English will be necessary, as well as a collaborative and enterprising attitude towards research in mathematics. Knowledge of the Dutch language is not required.

You will be employed at one of the following institutions: the University of Groningen, Leiden University, and Utrecht University; and you will work under the supervision of at least two consortium leaders. Each of the three consortium institutions has a very active algebraic geometry and number theory research group: Groningen, Leiden, Utrecht. You will have ample opportunity to participate in events organised by the consortium as well as other national events. Funding is also available to support travel to conferences and workshops abroad.

The research consortium “Rational points: new dimensions” is a research group on the arithmetic of rational points, based at the Bernoulli Institute of the University of Groningen, the Mathematical Institute of Leiden University and the Mathematical Institute of Utrecht University. The mathematical community in the Netherlands is tight-knit. The consortium members interact regularly with experts at universities other than those involved in the consortium, such as the University of Amsterdam, the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, and Radboud University in Nijmegen. These interactions are also facilitated by the monthly Intercity Number Theory Seminar, the Intercity Geometry Seminar, the twice-annual DIAMANT Symposium, and the twice-annual GQT School and Colloquium. We also keep in touch with our colleagues in Belgium through the “Getaltheorie in het Vlakke Land” seminar and the Belgian-Dutch Algebraic Geometry Seminar.
