The Department of Mathematics at Michigan State University invites applications for a fixed-term faculty position with an expected load of 6 courses per academic year split between teaching and coordinating. The department seeks candidates whose teaching or service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and inclusion in higher education.

The initial appointment, with an anticipated start date of August 16, 2022, will be for one academic year. Renewal for a multi-year appointment term up to three years will be considered based on available department funding and performance.

In addition to teaching large lectures in gateway mathematics classes (ranging from quantitative literacy and college algebra through multivariable calculus), the successful candidate will also gain experience and training in coordinating instruction for large enrollment courses with multiple instructors of record. This will be done as part of a vibrant, diverse, and close knit team of career instructional experts and mentors within the Department of Mathematics which serves over 10,000 students per year across various backgrounds and career interests. Once hired into the team, the new member can expect exciting instructional opportunities and career advice from their colleagues aimed at taking their instructional and mentoring capabilities to the next level. Other local resources—the Center for Instructional Mentoring (housed in the Department of Mathematics) and the MSU PRIME program—will provide rich opportunities for additional instructional training and career development.

We seek candidates who have demonstrated the ability to teach effectively in multiple modalities, the potential to coordinate and lead a team of individuals with different instructional responsibilities, and a commitment to cultivating equitable and inclusive learning environments.

We request that applications include the following material:
1. CV: The following information will be considered by the committee:
  • Education history
  • Proficiency with learning management systems, such as D2L, Blackboard, or Canvas
  • Teaching experiences both within and outside of the university classroom
  • Coordinating experience both within and outside of higher education (including coordinating teams with multiple goals and timelines such as coordinating a course with multiple instructors of record, supervising teams of K-12 teachers, serving as a “lead TA”, leading a service organization); please include a rough description of your role as well as an estimate of the number of individuals you coordinated
  • Activities/training that support undergraduate student success (e.g. undergraduate research supervision, academic/career advising, professional development in diversity and inclusion)
  • Outreach activities (including programs to support/supplement K-12 instruction and opportunities to engage the general public in mathematics).
2. References:  Names and contact information only for two references who can attest to your strengths in classroom instruction and/or coordination of a professional team. We specifically welcome letters from individuals who can base their evaluations on first-hand observations.

3. Lists of Courses Taught:  Please use the provided template at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1kDZlFkz7TZRVMF7elQnGkegRNgv9mt4qMNP7btvetbw/copy. Please export the sheet as a single PDF file and upload to MathJobs.

4. Teaching Statement (maximum 3 pages, or approximately 1500 words) which addresses the following:
  • Describe an experience where you assessed the efficacy of your own teaching practice, including how and from whom you sought the feedback and/or evaluation, and how this experience reinforced or changed your teaching
  • Describe how issues of diversity and inclusion shape your pedagogy.
  • Describe your competency in the use of technological solutions in instruction, including: experience creating content or assessment items on a learning management system; use of technological platforms to support communication, including both synchronous (in-class polling) and asynchronous (bulletin-boards, chats) means; creation or adoption of media for supporting online or hybrid instruction modalities.
Candidates who pass through the first round selection will also be invited to provide a teaching portfolio; the invitation will include detailed instructions on its preparation and submission.

Applications should be submitted via MathJobs.org; see listing https://www.mathjobs.org/jobs/list/19665 for detailed application instructions.
