If you can do Mathematics at 5000 ft and, in the down time, want to ski, climb, trail run, fish, hike, kayak, bike, or windsurf (or just enjoy the view!) in the last best place in the continental US, read on. The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Montana State University (MSU) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Mathematics, to begin August 2023. We seek candidates with demonstrated contributions to mathematics research who possess a commitment to excellence in teaching. We are interested in candidates with research interests in computational and applied mathematics, including the mathematics of machine learning and data science. Submit your application at https://jobs.montana.edu/postings/32779 Montana State University is a land-grant institution committed to higher achievement in research. The Department of Mathematical Sciences has a lively research culture, including M.S. and Ph.D. programs in Mathematics and Statistics, as well as an M.S. in Data Science. The faculty in the department comprises three disciplinary groups: Mathematics, Mathematics Education, and Statistics. The Mathematics group includes both pure and applied mathematicians, with research topics ranging from mathematical biology, mathematics of data science and machine learning, numerical PDEs, and optimization, to quantum topology, mathematical physics, complex analysis, and dynamical systems. We are seeking a candidate who will complement and extend these research areas. In particular, we seek candidates in Applied Mathematics in areas that include, but are not limited to, modeling and analysis of complex data and physical systems, mathematics of machine learning, data science, and scientific computing. Candidates who combine a deep background in one of these areas with an interest in concrete applications motivated from problems in science or in developing methods to understand large complex data sets are particularly sought. Duties include research, teaching, and service. An active research program and a commitment to excellence in teaching are essential. Research responsibilities include conducting a research program that results in publication in high-quality venues and seeking external funding for research and projects. Instructional responsibilities include teaching lower division, upper division, and graduate courses in mathematics, as well as supervising lower division mathematics courses. The candidate will also advise graduate and undergraduate students and serve on master’s and doctoral committees. Service includes department, college, and university committee work and participation in professional organizations. Required Qualifications:
