The Mathematics Department at Penn State, University Park, plans to make a significant investment in online delivery of mathematics courses in partnership with the Penn State World Campus. The Department is therefore seeking applicants for the new position of Director of Online Instruction in Mathematics. This will be a 48-week fixed-term multi-year appointment. The initial term will be three years with excellent opportunity for renewal. You will report to the Head of Department, Professor John Roe.
The duties of the position are:
- To author and maintain versions of existing Penn State mathematics courses for online delivery via Penn State's World Campus. The initial requirement is to develop a version of Math 110 (Business Calculus) for delivery in Spring 2009 and a version of Math 22 (College Algebra II) for delivery in Summer 2009. Instructional design support will be provided.
- To teach online and resident instruction courses as required by the Mathematics Department Head. Initial duties of the position will include responsibility for teaching online Math 110 and 22 as they are introduced, together with up to 2 courses in resident instruction. As the program grows we expect that the coordination duties (see below) will increase and that your direct instructional responsibilities will correspondingly be reduced.
- To coordinate the online delivery of these and other online mathematics courses offered through the World Campus. This includes the identification, recruitment, management, mentoring and coordination of other instructors; design and staffing of appropriate content-related help facilities; and other educationally beneficial activities that your skill and experience will suggest.
- To provide technical assistance to Mathematics Department instructors and faculty seeking to introduce online elements into resident instruction courses.
- To provide a central point of reference for online instructional efforts in mathematics across the Penn State system.
The person hired will be experienced in college-level mathematics instruction; will have a good working knowledge of web-based instructional delivery systems, including aspects specific to mathematics such as TeX; and will be able to work effectively with all sorts of people including instructors, mathematics faculty, instructional designers and senior administrators. A PhD in mathematics or a related field is preferred. Salary will be competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Application: Evaluation of applicants will begin April 7, 2008. Online application is strongly preferred via www.mathjobs.org.
Interested individuals should submit:
