About us

The School of Mathematical Science has an exceptionally strong research presence across the spectrum of areas within Pure and Applied Mathematics and Statistics and is currently organised into seven research groups, namely: Algebra and Number Theory; Combinatorics; Complex Systems and Networks; Dynamical Systems and Statistical Physics; Geometry, Analysis and Gravitation; Probability and Applications; and Statistics and Data Science. The School also has large and popular undergraduate and graduate programmes including an Institute and Faculty of Actuaries accredited programme in Actuarial Science. Moreover, the University is a partner of the Alan Turing Institute, facilitating exciting opportunities for collaborations with other academic institutions and industry.

Following a period of significant growth, the School comprises 74 academic staff and associate lecturers, 16 research assistants and 12 members of professional services staff. The School is home to around 90 PhD students, and approximately 1,000 undergraduates and 100 master level students, together with an award-winning student led Mathematics Society. About the role

Applications are invited for a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Actuarial Science to assist in the delivery of the actuarial undergraduate programmes and the postgraduate Business Analytics programme. The successful candidate will be a Fellow or Associate of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) and have industrial and/or teaching experience relevant to actuarial science. They will be expected to develop links with industry to foster knowledge exchange between university and industry, including work experience opportunities for students as well as the role holder’s own professional development. With the agreement of the Head of School, the role holder may undertake external consulting.

The successful candidate will have teaching experience appropriate to the level of appointment. At Senior Lecturer level they will have substantial experience of leading on the delivery and development of taught programmes as well as some relevant industrial experience. At Lecturer level they will have the knowledge and ability to teach across a range of topics in actuarial science, in particular the Core Statistics and Core Modelling subjects (CS1, CS2, CM1, CM2).

Pay and Benefits

The post is full-time and permanent, starting in April 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter. Starting salary will be in the range of £43,069 to £53,625 for an appointment at Lecturer Level or £56,678 - £63,351 at Senior Lecturer Level inclusive of London Allowance, plus a negotiable market supplement.
