INFORMATION: The mathematics
program at St. Olaf College is among the largest and most successful at
American undergraduate institutions. Graduating annually about 65 mathematics
majors, 20 statistics concentrators, and 5-10 computer science majors in a new
and growing program, St. Olaf is among the nation's top undergraduate origins
of Ph.D.'s in the mathematical sciences. With many majors to serve, we
regularly offer such advanced courses as complex analysis, topology, measure
theory, graph theory, and a variety of seminars in pure and applied
mathematics. In a typical summer 10--15 students do supported summer research
with department faculty. The
department has nearly 20 faculty members with expertise in algebraic topology,
complex analysis, graph theory, group theory, logic, mathematics education,
mathematical physics, operations research, partition theory, real analysis,
logic programming, reliable real time systems, computer graphics, statistics
and biostatistics. Our
department is proud to be the home of three outstanding programs in
mathematics, statistics, and computer science. While maintaining disciplinary rigor, we seek interactions
and synergy among the three programs.
The Center for Interdisciplinary Research is a nationally
recognized program that pairs faculty and students in MSCS with faculty
and students from other disciplines “to share in the excitement and challenge
of working across the traditional academic boundaries to collaborate on
research.” Opportunities abound
for collaborative research, especially involving undergraduates. Please visit the department web page at
