Department of Mathematics and Statistics 


The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Maine seeks to fill at least two three-year, assistant professor positions. These academic-year positions are anticipated to begin September 1, 2025 and are not renewable. Preference may be given to candidates whose research is in an area in which the department is presently active, to promote collaboration and such mentoring as may be appropriate. Candidates should comprehensively address this in their cover letter. Preference may also be given to applicants who can contribute to the University of Maine’s commitment to an inclusive and diverse student body that includes first-generation and low-income students and those from groups that are under-represented in mathematics, such as women and minorities. A Ph.D. in a relevant area is required by date of hire. Demonstrated effective college-level teaching, an active research program, and effective written and oral communication skills are also required. Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

  • Undergraduate teaching in mathematics and/or statistics. The regular teaching assignment is two courses per semester; in one semester during the second or third year this will be reduced to one course. The courses to be taught will usually be from the calculus sequence or other service material, however the opportunity will be given to teach upper-level material at least once.

  • Maintaining an active research program.

  • Participating collegially in the life of the department. 

The department offers BA, BS, and MA degrees in mathematics. In addition, our faculty provide mathematics and statistics instruction to the broader university community, are engaged in various outreach activities in our region and state, and are highly active in research.
