Position Description: The Department of Mathematics and Statistics invites application for a nine-month tenure track Faculty position in Applied Mathematics with principal duties to include research, teaching, and university and departmental service. The ideal candidate will have prior experience in the application of mathematics in interdisciplinary research projects and/or industry and exhibit strong potential for obtaining external funding. This individual will become an integral member of a diversified and active team of mathematics and statistics faculty supporting the Ph.D. in Computational Science and Statistics, the M.S. in Statistics or Data Science, and the M.S. and B.S. degrees in Mathematics offered at SDSU. The rank level for this position will be based on the candidate meeting the minimum qualifications and academic experience and service. SDSU is especially interested in candidates that can contribute to and/or coordinate course offerings that address the experiences of underrepresented minorities in organizations.  Responsibilities: Responsibilities will include teaching and advising in the undergraduate and graduate programs, research, service, and outreach to the campus and region. Teaching duties will include teaching three to six credits per semester of undergraduate and graduate courses, and advising undergraduate and graduate student projects and research. Research duties will include developing and maintaining a regionally relevant research program, and developing sources of external research funding and graduate student support. 

Required qualifications include an earned Ph.D. in Mathematics or Applied Mathematics or closely related field at the starting date of the appointment; broad training in applied mathematics; demonstrated potential to be an effective teacher at the graduate and undergraduate level; demonstrated potential to conduct an effective research agenda with the potential to obtain external funding; excellent written and verbal communication skills; and excellent collaborative and interpersonal skills.  

Desired qualifications include proven record of teaching excellence and a research agenda and proven record of funding and research specialization in one of the following areas: applied probability, financial mathematics, imaging science, multi-scale modeling, operations research, uncertainty quantification or a closely related area. The ideal candidate should also possess a demonstrated enthusiasm and aptitude to supervise student research. 

The Department: The Department of Mathematics & Statistics currently has 22 tenure-track faculty, 13 full time instructors, 78 graduate students, and 137 undergraduate majors. The department currently offers a B.S. and M.S. in Mathematics, an M.S. in Statistics, an M.S. in Data Science, and a Ph.D. in Computational Science and Statistics.  

University/Community: South Dakota State University is a land-grant institution and is the state’s largest institution of higher education with an enrollment of 12,500 students. SDSU is located in Brookings, South Dakota, a community of 23,000 near the east central border of South Dakota on Interstate 29. The city has an excellent K-12 education system, is accessible to major medical facilities, has an active cultural and social environment, and has numerous lakes and parks within driving distance. It is 50 miles north of Sioux Falls, a city with a population of 170,000 in a metropolitan area of 250,000.
