The Department of Mathematics at Occidental College seeks a Ph.D. mathematician to be appointed at the rank of Associate or Full Professor (with tenure), and serve as Department Chair for the first three years of the appointment, starting in fall of 2018. Applicants currently holding a tenured position, with demonstrated research expertise in Analysis (Real, Complex, Functional) or Number Theory (with applications to Computer Science preferred), will be considered. Candidates should have a deep commitment to teaching mathematics to students of diverse backgrounds at a strong undergraduate college of the liberal arts and sciences. The successful candidate will teach at all levels of undergraduate mathematics as well as Core (the College general education program).

Occidental College is a selective liberal arts college located in a residential section of northeast Los Angeles enrolling about 2000 students. The normal teaching schedule is the equivalent of five courses per year; department Chairs are granted a one-course release per academic year. A paid semester leave is normally granted every four years.

Applications should be submitted to mathsearch@oxy.edu with subject line: Tenured Professor Application, and must include the following: (1) a letter of interest explicitly addressing your commitment to academic excellence in a diverse liberal arts environment; (2) a letter describing previous Chair or equivalent administrative experience; (3) a statement of teaching philosophy that includes a discussion of your demonstrated commitment to, past evidence of, and future plans for creating equitable opportunities for learning and mentoring especially for underrepresented students; (4) a description of the research you would conduct at Occidental; (5) a curriculum vitae with publication list; (6) copies of three recent publications; and (7) the names of three references and their contact information. Please ensure that those named as references submit their confidential recommendations, one of which discusses the candidate’s teaching ability, to the address above. All materials (pdf format preferred) are due by October 15, 2017. Late applications may be considered until the position is filled.
