Position Description:    

The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) seeks an energetic leader to serve as Professor and Chair of the Department of Mathematical Sciences. The successful candidate must be qualified for tenure at the rank of Professor and must hold a Ph.D. in Mathematical Sciences or a related field. He/she is expected to have a strong record of leadership, excellence in research, teaching, and a proven track record of external funding. Applicants must also show a clear ability to move the department forward with innovative leadership, engage in leading the faculty in teaching undergraduate and graduate students, recruit students and seek funding for the Ph.D. program. The new Chair will also encourage collaboration and support a broad range of research, educational, and interdisciplinary efforts in the Department and across the university. The Department currently offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Mathematical Sciences and a Ph.D. degree in Applied Mathematics.

The UAH campus is located in Huntsville, Alabama, which is nestled in the Tennessee Valley and is a vibrant southern metropolis that is home to a robust economy. Among the region’s largest employers are the U.S. Army Redstone Arsenal, the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, and the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, and the nation’s second largest research park, Cummings Research Park (CRP). More than 285 high-tech and research companies and 25,000 employees are located in CRP, with UAH as the park’s anchor tenant. Downtown, small businesses and startups thrive thanks to ample support offered by the Huntsville Chamber of Commerce and the UAH Small Business Development Center. As a result, Huntsville has been listed among the nation’s top ten strongest economies and was recently named as one of the best cities to start a career, while Alabama has been noted as one of the top states for doing business. The metropolitan area’s 350,000+ residents are also considered some of the country’s most educated with one of the highest per-capita incomes.
