The Department of Mathematics at The University of Arizona invites applications for tenure-track positions at the rank of Assistant Professor, in partnership with the Graduate Interdisciplinary Programs of Applied Mathematics and Statistics. The Graduate Interdisciplinary Program in Statistics has unique strengths in theoretical, computational, and applied statistics. The Graduate Interdisciplinary Program in Applied Mathematics has well established groups in scientific computation, modeling, nonlinear partial differential equations, probability, and large-scale optimization. Both programs are actively engaged in collaborative research across the campus, as well as with high tech companies and government agencies, and are committed to developing better methods and tools for data-driven science.

We seek active researchers in the areas of statistical machine learning, complex system modeling, large-scale computing, and high-dimensional data analysis. Applicants must have a strong background in mathematics or statistics, with a doctorate degree in relevant disciplines. The candidates should be dedicated to methodological research, scientific collaborations, and the education of mathematicians and statisticians.

Members of the department create, communicate, and apply mathematics of the highest caliber through activities such as internationally recognized research and graduate education, award winning undergraduate programs, and extensive outreach to local schools. The department's faculty includes two Regents' Professors, two University Distinguished Professors, and numerous recipients of national and international awards. Over the last five years, a large percentage of the faculty has been awarded grants and contracts from external funding agencies, with total awards averaging about $4.2 million per year.

The department offers PhD, MS, and MA programs in Mathematics and Mathematics Education, and it provides major contributions to the Graduate Interdisciplinary Degree Programs in Applied Mathematics and Statistics. It also offers several unique post-doctoral opportunities for recent PhDs planning careers in research and education. Faculty members are expected to maintain an active research program, to participate in both undergraduate and graduate education, and to carry out advising duties and committee assignments. The normal teaching load for research active faculty is nine units for the academic year (the equivalent of three one-semester courses each year).

Candidates are expected to have a PhD by the time of appointment. They are also expected to have excellent research potential or record and a strong commitment to teaching.

Review of applications will begin November 1, 2017, and (contingent upon budgetary approval) will continue until the position is filled. Position candidates will be asked to submit an official application of employment through the University of Arizona's Human Resources website. Instructions for this step will be made available at the appropriate time. The University is an equal opportunity employer.
