Position Description:    

The Department of Mathematics (https://www.math.ucsc.edu) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a Teaching Professor.

Duties will consist of a combination of service and teaching “equivalent” to an eight course instructional workload, for example, fulfilled by teaching six 10-week courses (typically a 2-2-2 load in the quarter system) and performing a level of service equivalent to two courses per year. The primary focus of this position is the teaching of large enrollment, lower division courses, especially developmental and preparatory mathematics courses that enable students to study science, engineering, and mathematics. However, the successful candidate may be asked to teach courses throughout the undergraduate mathematics program.

The successful candidate will be expected to undertake a leadership role working with the faculty in areas of mathematical education. These may include, but are not limited to: training and mentoring teaching assistants; applying for grants, undertaking transformative teaching projects, developing outreach programs; organizing a broad range of undergraduate extracurricular activities; monitoring and providing support for Mathematics Placement; and representing the Mathematics Department on campus and system-wide. The successful candidate should be a skilled teacher who is familiar with best practices for improving learning outcomes, has innovative ideas for instructional improvement and has worked on curriculum development. The department is particularly interested in candidates with demonstrated commitment to enabling students from diverse backgrounds to pursue careers in mathematics, engineering, and science.

RANK: Assistant Teaching Professor

The Assistant Teaching Professor rank is a full-time position with the rights and responsibilities of membership in the Academic Senate. It has the payroll title Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employment. An LPSOE is eligible for promotion to “Security of Employment” which is analogous to tenure. Teaching, professional achievement, and University and public service constitute the criteria for advancement. Appointees to this title must have a record of intellectual leadership in mathematics instruction as documented by materials demonstrating that the candidate has made recognized contributions to the teaching and learning of mathematics.

SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience; academic year (9-month) basis

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. or equivalent foreign degree in Mathematics or related field expected to be completed by June 30, 2018. Demonstrated record of teaching college level Mathematics as primary instructor.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Demonstrated record of teaching college level Mathematics as primary instructor of large enrollment lower division courses. Record of instructional innovation and/or curriculum development. Record of leadership in Mathematics undergraduate education. A record of obtaining grants to support STEM education, and/or implementing such programs.
