Mathematical Community Management, Advising, and Support

Art of Problem Solving (AoPS) develops educational resources for eager math students, including a series of textbooks, an online school with nearly 15,000 annual enrollments, a heavily-traveled website for middle and high school math students, and four in-person learning centers. In coming years, we will expand all of these efforts, as well as launch a new online learning experience for elementary school math students. We have over 50 full-time employees and hundreds of part-time staff. Most of us are math people, and we're building the resources that we wish we'd had when we were kids.

While this role has a mix of duties, the major responsibilities of this position are helping parents and students make curricular choices, writing mathematical social media posts, and building a supportive community of mathematics students and enthusiasts.

The AoPS Community has many thousands of users discussing a wide range of mathematical and non-mathematical topics. We need someone who can help manage this community. Many students post on our forums seeking homework help, and the person in this role will actively participate by asking the right questions and providing guided feedback to help these students arrive at the solutions. The community manager would also actively moderate the forums, addressing both mathematical issues and interpersonal ones. As most of the participants in our community are students, we strive to provide a safe and welcoming place for them to discuss mathematics, academic concerns, and extracurricular interests.

The person in this role will also contribute to our mathematical presence on social media. This involves sourcing and constructing content to share and responding to comments in a mathematically accurate and engaging way.

Finally, we receive many contacts (via both email and social media channels) each day from parents of current and prospective students. The parents are seeking advice on the steps students should take to achieve their mathematical and educational goals, including course selection and college planning. Other parents have questions about our educational philosophy and our approach to teaching mathematics. The person in this role will respond to these queries via the online medium in which they were received.

  • A bachelors degree or higher in math or a closely related field. Having a good response to questions about the Numberphile video claiming that the sum of all positive integers is -1/12 is a plus.
  • Strong writing skills are essential.

To apply:

  • Send a cover letter and CV/resume to
  • If you have a writing sample that shows your ability to write about mathematics for a general audience, please include that in your application.
  • If you answer questions on a site such as Math Stack Exchange, please send links to some of your favorite answers.

We will be at the Joint Math Meetings in San Diego, and we would welcome the opportunity to discuss opportunities at AoPS with potential candidates.
