Lecturer in Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics invites applications for a full-time position as lecturer in mathematics, beginning in July 2018. Within the last decade, Amherst College has profoundly transformed its student body in terms of socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and nationality, among other areas. We seek applicants who can teach and encourage students of diverse backgrounds, including first-generation college students, international students, and students with varying mathematical preparation.

Responsibilities include teaching five mathematics courses per year (three in one semester, two in the other), co-organizing the annual comprehensive examination in mathematics with another faculty member, organizing course graders and peer tutors, advising a subset of math majors, and occasionally assisting with placement in mathematics courses. Teaching responsibilities will include teaching once every four semesters a section of introductory calculus that has an intensive problem session.

This is a full-time appointment with multi-year renewal, contingent on a successful review. Renewal is based on teaching and the other responsibilities of the lecturer outlined above.

Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in mathematics and have a passionate commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching. Submit cover letter, curriculum vitae, teaching statement, and two letters of recommendation about teaching to MathJobs.Org. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled, but all applications received by January 15, 2018, will be guaranteed full consideration.
