The Department of Computer Science and the Department of Mathematics in the College of Letters and Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater invite applications for one full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor beginning August 2018. This is a joint appointment in the two departments with responsibilities for teaching undergraduate courses, research, and service to the university, profession, and community, including leading campus data science initiatives. 


The successful candidate will be able to teach courses in computer science and courses in mathematics or statistics, to maintain an active program of scholarly activity, and to participate in service activities including, but not limited to, advising students, committee responsibilities, program assessment, and curriculum development.


Minimum: An earned doctorate or ABD (with expected completion by August 23, 2018) in computer science, statistics, or the mathematical sciences in any area related to data science.   

PreferencesAreas of research including, but not limited to, databases, data mining, high-performance/GPU computing, machine/deep learning, mathematical modeling, or statistical modeling and computing. Ability to teach courses in data mining, database management systems, machine/deep learning, mathematical modeling, numerical analysis, or probability and statistics.  Potential for interdisciplinary research and ability to promote undergraduate research.  Experience working with student populations with diverse backgrounds.


Full-time teaching responsibilities may include 12 undergraduate credits per semester from courses in computer science and courses in mathematics or statistics.  In addition to teaching duties, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute towards the development of data science initiatives on campus. Research expectations include maintaining an active program of scholarly activity with opportunities for undergraduate involvement. Service responsibilities include, but not limited to, advising students, committee responsibilities, program assessment, and curriculum development.   A commitment to teaching excellence and effective oral and written communication skills are required.  Faculty at UW-W may be required to teach online and/or in a hybrid format, or courses in the evenings. Faculty may also elect to teach New Student Seminar or University Learning Communities, or participate in other programs geared toward improving student success.




The UW-Whitewater Department of Mathematics offers mathematics major with emphasis in actuarial science, applied mathematics, pure mathematics, secondary education, or statistics. The UW-Whitewater Department of Computer Science offers a Master of Science degree in Computer Science and an undergraduate program geared toward students who want to pursue careers in commercial software production, computer design, database, network, software engineering, systems programming, or web development.
