The Assistant Director will play a critical role in shaping the future of the Math for Teaching program, a high quality twelve-year-old teacher education program located in the Harvard Extension School; instructors for the program are drawn mainly from the Harvard Math Department. The program currently has approximately 90 candidates, predominantly composed of current middle and high school math teachers. Responsibilities include:

  • strengthening the existing program
  • making curriculum decisions, developing new courses
  • helping to recruit and train faculty to teach Math for Teaching courses
  • acting as a liaison to local area schools, including Boston Public Schools (BPS)
  • representing the program at regional and national math education conferences

A major responsibility of the Assistant Director will be to act as the Research Advisor for the program, overseeing thesis proposal development for thesis track students (currently approximately 6 to 10 over the course of a year). This will require matching students with prospective thesis directors and overseeing final format review of completed theses. The Assistant Director will also take part in regular Extension School activities, such as participation in the Thesis Task Force along with other Research Advisor meetings.

Together with the Director, the Assistant Director will help manage a professional and effective teacher education program and facilitate outstanding faculty and student experiences in the following areas;

  • review program goals, policy, curriculum, and program requirements,
  • gather data to investigate, evaluate and implement new programs, course ideas, and certificates,
  • analyze curriculum and course content and restructure as needed

In addition, the Assistant Director will provide administrative support when needed such as helping with events for Math for Teaching candidates during the summer residency program, and other event development and management (annual Faculty meetings and Advisory Board meetings, etc.)

The Assistant Director will teach courses in the program as needed (for additional compensation).

Basic Qualifications:
  • Masters in either Mathematics or Math Education
  • A minimum of 5 years' teaching experience in Mathematics

Additional Qualifications:
  • PhD in Mathematics preferred
  • Knowledge of current trends in math education.
  • Experience in curriculum development
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, communication, and problem solving skills.
  • Strong faculty and student focus with understanding of the adult learner.
  • Familiarity with Harvard and working knowledge of internal systems a plus
  • Experience working independently and managing multiple tasks and priorities under pressure without direct supervision
