The Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences (MPI MiS) invites applications for several

Postdoctoral Researchers in Mathematical Physics.

The MPI MiS is a research institute located in Leipzig, Germany, and cooperates with Leipzig University. Research at the MPI MiS exploits the fruitful interaction between mathematics and the sciences. We not only apply existing mathematical methods and techniques to the sciences but we also transmit the conceptual and structural approach of mathematics into new areas of research, and, vice versa, translate scientific questions and problems into mathematical challenges.

These openings are related to a newly established initiative, funded by the Max-Planck Society and supported also by the University of Leipzig, to establish a strategic collaboration between researchers from MPI-MiS on the one hand, and the Mathematics Department and the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University on the other hand. The areas covered include
  • partial differential equations, in particular their ramifications into stochastic quantization, physical applications in quantum field theory and into random media,
  • statistical physics,
  • fluid dynamics,
  • geometric analysis, and
  • general relativity.

Applications are invited from candidates whose research profile broadly fits into these areas and the corresponding established groups at MPI-MiS and the University, and who can help us strengthen the strategic alliance through their research.

We offer:

  • Several postdoctoral positions for up to 3 years.
  • Usually no teaching duties, but the possibility to teach an advanced course in our international graduate school, and perspectively in our planned International M.Sc. program in Mathematical Physics at the University of Leipzig.
  • We provide a scientific environment where you are encouraged to explore new scientific directions and where you will find many partners with whom you can discuss a wide range of scientific ideas.

Application:

  • Deadline: Applications are reviewed from May 1, 2018 with a deadline of July 1, 2018, or until filled.
  • How to apply: Please submit your documents using our online application form for postdoctoral researchers.
  • Choose either Felix Otto or Stefan Hollands to be your mentor and add if appropriate further potential collaborators at MPI MiS or Leipzig University from the list available within the application system.
  • The Max-Planck society strives for gender diversity. We welcome applications from all backgrounds. The Max-Planck society is committed to increasing the number of individuals with disabilities in its workforce and therefore encourages applications from such qualified individuals.
