Do you want to join a friendly, cooperative group of teachers and scholars? The Department of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Statistics at Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Computer Science to begin September 1, 2019.

The Mathematics, Computer Science, and Statistics Department includes twelve faculty and resides in a spacious and well-equipped building. This position offers the freedom and stability to pursue research and teaching interests, independently and in collaboration with other faculty and engaged students. The Department is passionate about teaching and active in scholarship. We are especially interested in candidates who see an important role for computer science within the context of a liberal arts education and can share that vision with students.

Major/Essential Functions: Gustavus faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. The annual teaching assignment will be six courses, normally three courses per semester. Primary teaching responsibilities include courses in computer science at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum. Faculty in the department advise students majoring in statistics, mathematics, and computer science, as well as first-year students who have not yet decided on a major.

Required Qualifications: We seek candidates with an earned doctorate in Computer Science or a related discipline such as Software Engineering, Data Science, Computational Biology, or Machine Learning, but will also consider candidates who have achieved ABD status. The successful candidate will have prior experience teaching programming either in a classroom or laboratory setting, and will have the ability to teach introductory computer science courses. Candidates must have demonstrated effectiveness in teaching. A commitment to undergraduate teaching and advising is essential.

Preferred Qualifications: We are interested in candidates who will diversify the expertise and experience in the department, with a preference for applicants who have experience teaching either systems- or applications-related computer science courses. Applicants should demonstrate sympathy with the aims and ideals of liberal arts education and a commitment to supporting students from diverse backgrounds. Candidates are encouraged to describe previous activities mentoring women or members of underrepresented groups. Experience conducting undergraduate research is highly valued.
