Position Description:

*** The account for SAMSI, Statistical and Applied Mathematical Science Institute has expired, and no new applications will be accepted. ***

The Statistical and Applied Mathematical Sciences Institute (SAMSI) is soliciting applications from statistical, mathematical and computational scientists for up to 6 postdoctoral positions for the SAMSI research programs in 2019-2020.

SAMSI will run three research programs. One program will last the full year, and the other two will each last one semester. However, there is sufficient thematic overlap so that postdoctoral fellows will be able to participate for the full year in programs relevant to their research interests.

The year-long program will be Games, Decisions, Risk and Reliability. It will include game theory and adversarial risk analysis topics, relate these to decision theory, and also apply decision theory to risk analysis. An exciting aspect of the program will be to address non-standard utility functions that take account of the cost of memory, computation, and human effort to set up the analysis---these considerations are directly relevant to issues that arise in machine learning and data science. Program leaders include Ernest Fokoué, David Rios Insua, Fabrizio Ruggeri, and Refik Soyer.

The fall semester program, Deep Learning, will be on statistical strategies for improving machine learning. There is vast interest in automated methods for complex data analysis. However, there is a lack of consideration of (1) interpretability, (2) uncertainty quantification, (3) applications with limited training data, and (4) selection bias. Statistical methods can achieve (1)-(4) through a change in focus. Program leaders include David Dunson, Cynthia Rudin, and Barbara Englehardt, and medical/health applications will be a significant theme.

The spring semester program will be Causal Inference. Again, medical and health applications will be a significant theme, but other applications will be considered. Much of the new work in causal inference entails modern machine learning tools, and this perspective will be important to the program. The program leaders include Fan Li, Alex Volfovsky, Ilya Shpitser, and Francesca Dominici.

Appointments will begin in August, 2019 and typically run for two years, although they can also be arranged for a single year. Appointments are made jointly between SAMSI and one of its partner universities (Duke University, North Carolina State University, and the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill). Teaching opportunities may be available. The positions offer extremely competitive salaries, a travel stipend, and health insurance benefits.

Criteria for selection of SAMSI Postdoctoral Fellows include demonstrated research ability in statistics, applied mathematics, and/or computational science, excellent computing skills, and the ability to communicate both orally and in writing. Also, the preferred applicant will have a strong interest in one or more of the research programs scheduled for 2019-2020. The deadline for full consideration is December 15, 2018, although later applications will be considered as resources permit.

Please specify which SAMSI programs you are applying for in your cover letter and why you believe you would be a good fit for those programs.

**SAMSI is an Equal Opportunity Employer**
