About FitMyLife Health Analytics Incorporated:

FitMyLife is a new type of fitness application.

The market is loaded with simple applications that might count calories, show you how many steps you have taken in a day, or give you a workout the same as for any other user.

FitMyLife changes the paradigm. We use sophisticated health analytics to model your metabolism. And YOUR metabolism is most often different from everyone else's. You digest fat, carbs, and protein differently from others. You may need more or less calories to maintain your weight than others. At FitMyLife, we model what is unique to you. We use information about what you have eaten and what exercise you do to figure out how you can best reach your fitness goals.

Fitmylife Health Analytics, a private company in Edmonton, Canada is collaborating with the Department of Mathematics at the University of Alberta to develop mathematical models of human energy metabolism and behaviour change. Models will be used in conjunction with a mobile application to help clients achieve their designated health goals. The collaboration with the University of Alberta will likely also involve a number of volunteer studies in the Metabolic Lab whereby new data will be acquired to inform and improve the models.

Fitmylife offers applications that leverage health analytics to help clients pro-actively manage health objectives. Clients acquire biometric data through activity tracking devices (e.g., fitbits, Garmin watches, etc.). This data is uploaded into mathematical models which then provide detailed information driven by the clients own body on the effectiveness of a range of health management strategies.

Job Description


Developing software to solve sets of ordinary differential equations subject to a set of initial conditions unique to each client. Enhancing the models to incorporate information acquired from activity tracking devices about types, intensity, and duration of activity. Enhancing the models to better incorporate information related to caloric intake (e.g., macronutrients, time of caloric ingestion, and ingestion of certain minerals). Enhancing the models to better correspond with detailed information related to body composition acquired through volunteer studies at the Metabolic Lab. Developing models in MatLab and/or R for Multi-objective optimisation. Developing Structural Equation Models in Lavaan or similar software systems. Design clinical studies procedures to collect data relevant to behaviour change. Analyzing the collected data with a variety of relevant mathematical and statistical tools. Qualifications:

A Master’s or Doctorate degree in Mathematics, Statistics, or Computer Science is a prerequisite for the position. Familiarity with numerical methods for solving ODEs and PDEs is also a prerequisite. Expertise with the human energy metabolism is desirable but not strictly necessary.

A full time, permanent position for a talented individual with a background in numerical mathematical and/or statistics is available with FitMyLife. We seek a candidate with a strong background in mathematical and/or statistical modeling (preferably of biological systems) and outstanding problem-solving skills. Communication is a must, as you will work with an interdisciplinary team to solve and improve existing and/or new challenges. The ideal candidate is a highly motivated individual who enjoys learning new things and is able to apply new or existing theory tackle real life problems.
