About us

Queen Mary is one of London and the UK’s leading research-focused universities. With over 20,000 students, it is amongst the largest of the colleges of the University of London. Queen Mary’s 4,000 staff teach and research across a wide range of subjects in Science and Engineering, the Humanities, Social Sciences and Laws, and Medicine and Dentistry.

The School of Mathematical Science has an exceptionally strong research presence across the spectrum of areas within Pure and Applied Mathematics, and is currently organised into six research groups, namely: Algebra, Combinatorics, Complex Systems and Networks, Dynamical Systems and Statistical Physics, Geometry and Analysis and Probability and Applications. The School also has large and popular undergraduate and graduate programmes.

About the role

We are seeking to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Assistant to participate in the research project “Probabilistic and Deterministic Topology’ funded by the Leverhulme Trust. The research will be undertaken under the supervision of Professor Michael Farber. The project intends to tackle some major open questions of low dimensional topology by using newly developed tools of probabilistic topology. Probabilistic topological tools (large random spaces) can also be used for modelling large complex systems in various practical applications. Applicants should possess an excellent knowledge of algebraic topology and have a proven record of conducting research; knowledge and experience of working in other relevant research areas of mathematics (such as applied probability or combinatorics) will be an advantage.

The School holds a departmental Bronze Athena SWAN Award and is a registered supporter of the LMS Good Practice scheme. We are committed to the equality of opportunities and to advancing women’s careers.

Pay & Benefits

The post is full time, fixed term appointment for three years, with an expected start date on 1 December 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter until 31 October 2021. Salary will be in the range of £32,956 - £36,667 inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.

Informal enquiries should be addressed to Professor Michael Farber at m.farber@qmul.ac.uk
