Position Description:    

The Department of Mathematics at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) invites applications for a tenure-track nine-month faculty position in Computational and Applied Mathematics at the rank of Assistant/Associate Professor to commence in the fall semester of 2019. The open position will be a joint appointment between the Department of Mathematics and the UTC Center of Excellence in Applied Computational Science and Engineering – the SimCenter (http://www.utc.edu/simcenter). The SimCenter is UTC’s core research computing facility and is the leading center at UTC for modeling, simulation, high performance computing, and data science. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The teaching requirement for the position is negotiable. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Mathematics or a related field. Individuals who are "all but dissertation" (ABD) will be considered; however, the degree must be awarded within twelve months of the first semester of employment.

The Department of Mathematics consists of 18 tenured and tenure-track faculty members and prides itself on a tradition of active and productive teaching/research, with growing interest for national impact. Research activities and external grants have been steadily growing in recent years. The successful candidate must have a record of excellence in teaching at the college level and a strong record of, or outstanding potential for, significant research, and a commitment to service at both the Department and University levels. For each position, we are especially looking for candidates who can promote the collaboration between the Department of Mathematics and the SimCenter, a recognized Center of Excellence in Computational Science.

Qualifications Candidates in the following areas are especially encouraged to apply: numerical analysis, scientific computing with application to mechanical, engineering, biomedical fields, and Machine Learning. Candidates in other relevant areas will also be considered. This position will offer a highly competitive salary and tremendous opportunities for interdisciplinary research. We are especially looking for candidates who can make significant contributions to the Computational Science Ph.D. and M.S. programs at UTC and those who can promote the collaboration between the Department of Mathematics and the SimCenter. The Ph.D. program in Computational Science includes concentrations in Computational and Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, and Computational Engineering. The position will be jointly funded by the Department of Mathematics and the SimCenter. The successful applicant will have an appointment in both units and will be a member of the Department of Mathematics.
