Research Fellow

Full Time

The appointment will be on UCL Grade 7. The salary range will be £35,328 - £37,281 per annum , inclusive of London Allowance.

The department has internationally recognised research groups in pure and applied analysis; fluid mechanics; mathematical physics; geometry and topology; algebra, number theory and combinatorics; mathematical modelling in biology, finance, industry and society.

Applications are invited for a full-time Research Fellow position to work with Dr Costante Bellettini on the project ‘Stable hypersurfaces with prescribed mean curvature’, funded by EPSRC. The project focuses on integral varifolds whose generalized mean curvature is prescribed by an ambient function and explores connections to several related areas of research, for example Allen—Cahn approximation schemes and the study of liquid drops in equilibrium.

The responsibilities of the post will include: carrying out vigorous, high-level research in the area of geometric analysis, submitting publications regularly in refereed journals; participating in local seminars and in national and international conferences.

This post is available from 1st March 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Candidates should either have a PhD or equivalent qualification in Mathematics, or should be finalising their PhD or waiting for their viva date.

Please note: Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent on award and confirmation of a PhD (or equivalent). If this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Research Assistant Grade 6B, point 26 (salary £32,607 per annum inclusive of London allowance) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.

The candidate should have research experience in geometric analysis, and a proven track record in research and publishing. Excellent interpersonal skills are required to facilitate participation in a research group, and the candidate should have a strong desire to work at the heart of, and fully participate in, an active research group in the field. They should also have excellent communication skills, both written and oral.

The successful candidate is expected to have some expertise and research experience in the following areas: calculus of variations, elliptic PDEs (e.g. Allen—Cahn equation, minimal surface equation, CMC equation), geometric measure theory (e.g. varifolds, Caccioppoli sets).

A PhD in the area of Geometric Analysis is desirable.
