Position Description:    

Associate Director of the Learning Centers – Science and Math James Madison University (JMU) invites applicants for the position of Associate Director of the Learning Centers – Science and Math. This is a full-time, instructional faculty appointment within the Learning Centers Department at JMU, with the possibility of promotion and tenure in a partnering home department. Responsibilities include teaching, administration and scholarship. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a vision for supporting STEM learning across disciplines while leading the Science & Math Learning Center (SMLC). The SMLC is currently supported by five full-time instructional faculty representing Chemistry, Mathematics & Statistics and Physics. The Associate Director of the Learning Centers – Science and Math reports directly to the Executive Director of the Learning Centers.

The Learning Centers Department consists of 6 major programs that support classroom instruction. These programs are the Science & Math Learning Center, the Communication Center, Digital Communication Consulting, English Language Learner Services, Peer-Assisted Study Sessions and the University Writing Center. In 2014, the Centers moved into a 14,000 square foot, state-of-the-art facility in the center of JMU’s campus. The department’s 14 faculty members teach in nine different disciplines, provide instruction in the Centers, engage in relevant scholarship and professional development, administer programs and train and mentor more than 100 peer educators. The department is supported by an administrative team of three staff members, providing exceptional support for each of the six programs and individual faculty members. Duties and Responsibilities ·
  • Provide leadership and administrative oversight for the SMLC
  • Support the Learning Centers Executive Director with day to day and long-term planning
  • Deliver instruction in the SMLC
  • Teach one course per semester in a relevant discipline.
  • Serve as liaison between the Learning Centers and STEM-related disciplines.
  • Engage in appropriate scholarly and professional development activities.
Required Qualifications
  • Doctoral degree in either Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, STEM Education, or a closely related field.
  • College teaching experience.
  • Expertise in pedagogy or STEM education.
  • Demonstrated success in collaboration.
  • Administrative experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with college level tutoring or other learning support programs.
  • Administrative experience within a Learning Center or similar tutoring support program
  • Assessment and/or program evaluation experience.
  • Expertise in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.
  • Demonstrated potential for leading and mentoring.
