Position Description:    

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. The Chair is expected to possess the vision necessary to lead the department as it contributes to the University’s goal of becoming a leading research university and as it continues in its commitment to provide educational opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students of diverse backgrounds. The preferred starting date is July 1, 2019.

Qualifications: This tenured position at the Full Professor level is open to candidates who have 1) a PhD in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field; 2) a distinguished record of teaching and scholarly research; 3) demonstrated success in attracting external funding; 4) the leadership and interpersonal skills necessary to lead a vibrant, diverse department committed to teaching and research excellence; and 5) ability to work with faculty and administrators across the university; and 6) strong commitment to promoting diversity in the work environment. Previous successful chair or significant administrative experience is preferred.

Responsibilities: The Chair provides leadership to the Department on a day-to-day basis. In addition, the Chair must be able to 1) work with faculty and students from multiple disciplines; 2) attract and retain top-tier faculty; 3) maintain and enhance existing undergraduate and graduate degree programs; 4) cooperate with other departments to enhance student success; 5) advance the commitment of the Department to research in the mathematical sciences, teaching excellence, and community-based scholarship and outreach; 6) pursue external funding opportunities; and 7) support and promote diversity in the university community.

The Department: The Department has 59 full-time faculty members (including eleven lecturers) and a staff of four. The Department’s mission is to create, extend, and disseminate basic and applied knowledge of mathematics and statistics through scholarly research, teaching, and service. We offer BA and BS degrees in Mathematics and Mathematics for Business, an MS degree in Mathematics (including concentrations in general mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, and mathematics education), an MS degree in Mathematical Finance (in collaboration with the College of Business), and a PhD degree in Applied Mathematics. Currently, there are 45 PhD students, 27 Masters students, and over 450 undergraduate majors. The Department has strong faculty in Applied Mathematics (computation and numerical analysis, dynamical systems, financial mathematics, inverse problems, probability, and mathematical physics), Pure Mathematics (algebra, analysis, combinatorics, number theory, and topology), Mathematics Education, and Statistics.

The University and College: UNC Charlotte is a rapidly growing doctoral-granting urban university located in the largest metropolitan area between Washington DC, and Atlanta. The University is a Carnegie Foundation Community Engagement campus. Over 29,000 culturally diverse students currently are enrolled at the University. As the largest college at UNC Charlotte, the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences houses 20 departments in the humanities, social and behavioral sciences, natural sciences and military sciences, as well as 25 applied research centers and interdisciplinary programs. It offers eight doctoral degrees, 24 master's degrees, 12 graduate certificates, and 32 undergraduate degrees.

The Charlotte Region: Charlotte, the 17th largest city in the US, is one of the nation’s fastest growing metropolitan areas and is the second largest banking/financial center in the nation.
