Position Description:    

The Faculty of Science and the Mathematical Institute of Leiden University are looking for:

Assistant/Associate Professor in Mathematics (38hrs.) Vacancy number: 18-420

Key responsibilities The candidate will perform research, contribute to the teaching tasks, and share into other responsibilities of the Mathematical Institute. Candidates from a wide range of fields in mathematics are invited to apply, in particular candidates with a research interest that connects to research currently carried out in the institute. Appointments can be fixed term (two to four years) or for indefinite duration, at a level depending on the candidate and budgetary approvals. Teaching duties in the Mathematical Institute are shared and rotate among the members of the institute. They may concern courses in the bachelor's or master's programmes in mathematics or (applied) statistics, or mathematically oriented courses for other students.

The research carried out at the Faculty of Science is very diverse, ranging from mathematics, information science, astronomy, physics, chemistry and bio-pharmaceutical sciences to biology and environmental sciences. The research activities are organised in eight institutes. These institutes offer eight bachelor’s and twelve master’s programmes. The faculty has grown strongly in recent years and now has more than 1,300 staff and almost 4,000 students. The Mathematical Institute is one of the eight institutes within the Faculty of Science. The expertise of the members of the institute covers a broad range of topics, with a focus on Algebra, Geometry and Number Theory; Analysis and Dynamical Systems; Probability Theory; and Statistics. Research focuses both on fundamental mathematics and statistics and on applications in other sciences, society and industry. The Mathematical Institute offers bachelor and master programmes in pure and applied mathematics and a master programme in applied statistics, and contributes to the national educational programme mastermath and the international programme Algant. It also offers many courses in mathematics and statistics for other academic programmes. There is a strong cohesion among the members of the institute, with a shared responsibility across the spectrum of mathematics.

Terms and conditions The appointment will be at the level of assistant or associate professor ("Universitair (Hoofd) Docent"). Pending budgetary approval and excellent performance the institute foresees positions both for fixed term and for undetermined duration. For exceptional candidates promotion to full professor is not excluded. Salary range from € 3.345,- to € 6.567,- gross per month (pay scale 11-14), in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities).
