The David R. Hayworth College of Arts and Sciences at High Point University invites applications for the position of Chair, Department of Mathematical Sciences, beginning Fall, 2019. We seek a dynamic and visionary leader who can build on the strengths of a well-established and thriving program. Members of this department are already engaged in incorporating emerging pedagogies and exploring innovative and cutting-edge curriculum, and seek a guide and collaborator in this ongoing process. The ideal candidate will be an established scholar in the field of Mathematics, Statistics, or closely-related field in the Mathematical Sciences, with demonstrated administrative experience, evidence of excellence in teaching, and a strong record of publication and research. In addition to a record of leadership, exceptional communication skills, an entrepreneurial spirit and an interest in working with highly motivated undergraduate students are desirable. While the area of mathematical expertise is open, the department seeks candidates well-suited in character and temperament to a liberal arts environment, who share the department’s commitment to fostering intellectual curiosity and preparing students for lifelong learning. The department offers majors and minors in Mathematics, Actuarial Science, Data Analytics and Statistics, and Mathematical Economics. The faculty also actively participate in the University’s Honors Program and the First Year Seminar Program.

The current rank of full professor is preferred although associate professors with exceptional records of leadership will be considered.

  • Doctorate in mathematics, data analytics, statistics or closely related field.  The field of specialization is open.
Experience and Training:
  • Record of teaching and scholarship that merit appointment to department chair, minimally at the rank of Associate Professor, full Professor is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, Ability:
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching, service and research as well as prior administrative experience at the college or university level, experience assessing programs, designing and leading new curricular and programmatic initiatives, and experience working collaboratively with other programs, within and beyond a College of Arts and Sciences, e.g., experience working with Engineering programs, Health Science programs, Business, and Education programs.
  • Skilled at communicating the importance of mathematical and critical reasoning, and share passion for working with undergraduate students on real-world projects and purposeful research in a liberal arts setting.
  • Responsible for the academic leadership of a 16-member Department of Mathematical Sciences beginning in the Fall of 2019.
  • Manage course scheduling, budgeting, hiring and evaluation of faculty, the assessment of programs, and the recruitment and retention of majors.
  •  Work to expand partnerships with other programs across the university (e.g., Engineering, Physics, Biology, Health Sciences, Business, Education, etc.) to provide innovative and integrated educational experiences for all High Point University students.
ACCOUNTABILITY: This position reports directly to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
