Scope of Job

The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (SMSS) at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) invites applications for two positions in mathematics education at the rank of Assistant Professor pending budget or programmatic approval. All areas of mathematics education background will be considered. The appointment involves teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, primarily at the Brownsville campus, as well as active research and service. The successful candidate should be engaged in activities with students, faculty, and staff along with local and regional educational professionals. The SMSS is part of the College of Sciences (COS) at UTRGV. With over 182 faculty and 4,000 undergraduate and graduate students, the College of Sciences takes pride in preparing students for diverse careers via many educational programs, including the Nation’s largest UTeach program that prepares Math and Science majors for middle and secondary school level education.

Other academic units within COS include: Biology, Chemistry, School of Earth, Environmental, and Marine Sciences, and Physics & Astronomy.

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 as the first major public university of the 21st century in Texas. This transformative initiative provided the opportunity to expand educational opportunities in the Rio Grande Valley, including a new School of Medicine, and made it possible for residents of the region to benefit from the Permanent University Fund – a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and other institutions.

UTRGV has campuses and off-campus research and teaching sites throughout the Rio Grande Valley including in Boca Chica Beach, Brownsville (formerly The University of Texas at Brownsville campus), Edinburg (formerly The University of Texas-Pan American campus), Harlingen, McAllen, Port Isabel, Rio Grande City, and South Padre Island. UTRGV, a comprehensive academic institution, enrolled its first class in the fall of 2015, and the School of Medicine welcomed its first class in the summer of 2016.

Minimum Qualifications

Ed.D./Ph.D. in Mathematics Education or in a closely related area from an accredited university with at least 18 graduate hours in mathematics. The degree should be awarded no later than the proposed start date.

Preferred Qualifications: We seek applicants with (a.) a strong background in mathematics content; (b.) math education content at the graduate level and/or evidence of active research in math education; (c.) experience teaching and conducting research and service with women and underrepresented minority groups; (d.) experience integrating technology into instruction, or skills to use alternative delivery models; and/or (e) the ability to contribute to the Spanish/English dual-language program in Mathematics.

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
