Stella and Charles Guttman Community College, City University of New York, seeks to fill a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Mathematics. This appointment will begin in fall 2019. General responsibilities of all full-time Guttman faculty include teaching courses in the First-Year Experience as part of an instructional team, as well as teaching courses in the majors and advising students. For this position, the successful candidate will teach Statistics and Quantitative Reasoning as a member of an interdisciplinary instructional team in the College's first-year core curriculum, as well as teach courses in Mathematics beyond the first-year curriculum.

As the newest community college in the CUNY system, Guttman’s mission emphasizes student success as manifest in learning and degree completion and a commitment to helping students achieve professional and educational goals. Our students primarily take general education and lower division courses for university transfer. The instructional model combines high impact educational practices, including learning communities, peer mentoring, experiential learning, ePortfolio, and full-time first year attendance. Academic technology is particularly emphasized in the delivery and assessment of student learning and advising. Faculty collaborate in an interdisciplinary environment as part of a first year instructional team, and in a limited number of Programs of Study, rather than in traditional academic departments. In addition to teaching and scholarship, appropriate service is an important component of expected faculty effort.

Faculty on tenure-track appointments receive reassigned time to pursue scholarship. A record of scholarly production, whether in the faculty member's disciplinary field or in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, is required for tenure and promotion.

Ph.D. degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Mathematics or Statistics Education, Applied Mathematics, Developmental Mathematics, or a related field (awarded by start of fall, 2019-2020 academic year) and at least two years of successful teaching experience in a college setting (full-time or part-time) required. Due to the interdisciplinary organization of the college, the ability to collaborate well with others in academics, student services and administration is expected.

Preferred Qualifications:
-Experience with pedagogical practices central to Guttman's educational model and to fostering equity and inclusion, such as learning communities, undergraduate research, project-based learning, inquiry-based learning, experiential education, embedded remediation, civic engagement, electronic portfolios, universal design principles, and peer mentoring
-Demonstrated capacity to use a diverse range of effective student-centered instructional strategies and openness to adopting new practices
-Demonstrated ability to cross disciplinary boundaries and be able to analyze the conceptual demands of mathematical and/or statistical assignments across the disciplines
-Ability to use a technology-rich environment to promote conceptual understanding of mathematics and statistics and to engage students in problem solving
-A practice of reflective thinking about the teaching and learning of mathematics and statistics
