In a major strategic initiative, the University of Birmingham in collaboration with Jinan University, Guangzhou, China, has set up a Joint Institute for Teaching and Research, located on Jinan University’s southern campus in Guangzhou. The Institute, which took its first undergraduate intake in September 2017, delivers joint degree programmes in mathematics, attracting high quality undergraduate students from across China. These programmes are taught in English at the Joint Institute in Guangzhou, with the mathematics component being delivered by staff from the University of Birmingham. We are looking for applicants with the ability to develop and deliver high quality modules into these programmes. The successful candidates will be expected to contribute substantially to maintaining and enhancing the School’s high standards in both teaching and research (teaching only in the case of teaching focused appointments). The post holders will be based in the School of Mathematics in Birmingham and will typically be expected to make two trips to Guangzhou per year, each of one month’s duration, or possibly one trip of two months duration, to deliver intensively taught modules. There may perhaps be a small number of shorter trips.

The team currently consists of eight members and it will increase to 12 when fully staffed. For this round of recruitment to the initiative, which is attracting significant numbers of exceptional new staff to the School of Mathematics in Birmingham, we are looking to appoint two new colleagues with experience of, or demonstrable potential for, teaching modules in optimization. Candidates working in any area of mathematics or statistics may apply. We particularly encourage applications from candidates working in any area of theoretical or applied optimization including tropical mathematics, game theory, computational modelling, and stochastic optimization. Candidates should hold a PhD, or equivalent, in Mathematics or a related subject. Unless teaching focused, they will typically have an exciting and active research profile, possibly with research interests that lead to impact activity. Successful candidates will have a track record of (or demonstrable potential for) excellent, enthusiastic and committed teaching and learning in optimization to a broad range of students. They should be able to contribute to the development of the School’s optimization curriculum for both undergraduate and masters students. The posts are available at either Lecturer or Senior Lecturer grade depending on the relevant prior experience of the candidate. The appointments panel will consider teaching focused appointments for suitable high quality candidates.

The School of Mathematics is a supportive, family friendly environment, committed to equality, diversity and inclusivity. We encourage applications from the widest community and provide equal opportunities in our recruitment processes. The University of Birmingham is proud to be a member of Stonewall and has a Bronze Athena SWAN award, demonstrating its commitment to supporting women in science.

Two other posts, open to candidates working in any area of mathematics or statistics but focussing on the teaching of statistics, are also available and have been advertised separately. Suitably qualified applicants are welcome to apply for these posts as well, but will need to make a separate application (although the same documents may be used for both applications).
