Research Fellow in Mathematics

The department of mathematics at the University of Sussex offers a fixed term postdoctoral position in Probability and Mathematical Physics. Initially, the position is for 22 months but this may be extended subject to additional funding. We welcome applicants in these areas broadly, but those with an interest in random matrix theory, interacting particle systems, and exactly solvable models are encouraged to apply.

The post comes with a generous travel bursary that will enable the successful candidate to participate in international conferences and summer schools. Prospective candidates should hold a PhD in Mathematics or Theoretical Physics, or be in the final stages of writing up their PhD thesis and have submitted by the start date of the position.

Preferably, applicants would have some experience in areas such as: Random matrices broadly defined (e.g. to include two dimensional Coulomb gases, models in integrable probability or Wigner matrices), probability theory in relation to Gaussian processes such as the Gaussian Free Field, integrable models and their solutions in terms of e.g. Fredholm determinants or orthogonal polynomials. The post-holder will work closely with the principal investigator Dr. Nicholas Simm in the Probability and Statistics research group and will benefit from recent growth in random matrix theory and probability within the department.

Hours: Full-time or part-time hours considered up to a maximum of 1.0 FTE. Requests for flexible working options will be considered (subject to business need).

Contract: Fixed term for 22 months

Salary: Starting at £33,139 and rising to £39,609 per annum

Closing date: 1st February 2019. Applications must be received by midnight of the closing date.

Expected Interview date: TBC

Expected start date: mid-2019 TBC

The School is committed to equality and valuing diversity, and currently holds an Athena SWAN Silver Award. Applications are particularly welcomed from women and black and minority ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in academic posts in Science, Technology, Engineering, Medicine and Mathematics (STEMM) at Sussex. The School of Life Sciences welcomes applications to academic posts from candidates who wish to work part-time or as job-sharers.

The University of Sussex values the diversity of its staff and students and we welcome applicants from all backgrounds.
