The Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (IWR) at Heidelberg University invites applications for a Junior-Professorship (W1, fixed term for 6 years) in Machine Learning in Scientific Computing.

This Junior-Professorship is part of the funding programme Artificial Intelligence Baden-W├╝rttemberg (KI-BW) and comes with excellent financial resources. The main research focus of the successful applicant should be in the development of methodologies in machine learning that address in particular problems, where the sparsity or uncertainty of data requires an integration of machine learning algorithms with established physical or other parametric models.

A successful applicant will have a developing track record of independent research of international standing. The appointee will be expected to sustain a leading research programme and have an excellent publication record. In particular, we also expect a keen interest in interdisciplinary research as well as collaborative research with the other groups at the IWR and in the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, in particular the research groups in Scientific Computing, in Numerical Methods and in Machine Learning.

An active participation in the Heidelberg Graduate School of Mathematical and Computational Methods for the Sciences (HGS MathComp) as well as in joint research projects and joint applications for external funding will be expected. This IWR Junior-Professorship also includes teaching duties in the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science. The affiliation with one of the institutes of the faculty will be decided in discussion with the successful applicant after the appointment. Heidelberg University offers a world-class research environment embedded in a metropolitan region with a high quality of life on the edge of a regional national park.

In accordance with Section 51 Landeshochschulgesetz Baden-Wuerttemberg (the Baden-Wuerttemberg State Higher Education Act), this appointment requires a completed degree, an excellent doctorate, and pedagogical aptitude which has generally been proven through teaching experience. If you spent time employed as a research assistant (before and after your doctorate), this employment and the period of your doctoral studies combined should not exceed six years. Provided that the general legal (German civil service law) and budgetary regulations are fulfilled, it is intended that the employment will have civil service status. Heidelberg University seeks to achieve a higher proportion of women in areas where they have not been adequately represented so far. Women with the requisite qualifications are expressly encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to disabled applicants with equal qualifications and aptitude for the post.

Applications with the usual documents (curriculum vitae, list of publications, record of teaching activities, research plan) should be submitted electronically (as a single PDF-document) until 01/04/2019 to the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science (email: dekanat@mathinf.uni-heidelberg.de).
