World-leading research in international and interdisciplinary context
The Department of Public Health and Clinical Medicine and its Section of Sustainable Health are looking for a doctoral student with a focus on mathematical modeling of infection spread for mosquito-borne virus diseases in relation to the environment, climate change and social systems. 

The section of Sustainable Health conducts world-leading research in the cross-section of the area climate, environment and infectious diseases based on the application of advanced mathematics, where programming, mathematical modeling and treatment of empirical data is of the utmost importance. Good knowledge of peoples, viruses and vectors (especially disease-spreading mosquitoes) biology and interactions are also essential ingredients. 

The research within the department is highly interdisciplinary and internationally active. Researchers at the department often contribute to large international collaborative studies and networks, such as WHO, IPCC, and Centers of Disease Control, and actively contribute to knowledge and capacity development internationally, including in low- and middle income countries. At Umeå University there is recognized strong research in several related areas, including applied mathematics, microbiology, epidemiology and public health, sustainability and artificial intelligence. 

Description of the doctoral project 
The project aims to develop new mathematical epidemiological models of vectorborne diseases to be used in risk assessments, and for targeting preventive efforts. The project specifically aims to prevent the spread and outbreaks of Arboviruses, such as Dengue, Zika, Yellow fever and Chikungunya. Computer intensive simulation models to be developed which simulate the spread of infections over space and time, and in the near and distal future in relation to climate change scenarios. 

Qualifications  
To be eligible for employment as a doctoral student, basic and special qualifications are required. Basic eligibility has the person who 
a) has completed a degree at advanced level, or 
b) completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits, or 
c) in some way within or outside the country has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge (HF 7 ch. 39). 

In order to fulfill the requirement for special eligibility for the service, the applicant must 
a) have completed the degree advanced level in one of the following areas: Master of Science in Engineering, Mathematics, Mathematics statistics, computer science, or physics or, or 
b) other equivalent education of relevance, with corresponding scope and depth. 

The requirements are deemed to have been met by the person in another way except the country, acquired essentially the same knowledge. 

In the selection of eligible applicants, consideration is primarily given to:  
  • ability to take advantage of the education 
  • previous qualifications 
The following assessment criteria are applied when examining the ability to assimilate the education:
  • analytical ability 
  • communicative ability, written and oral 
  • critical ability 
  • independence 
  • performance within given time frames 
Special eligibility 
In order to be admitted to postgraduate education, the applicant must have 1) the necessary knowledge from university education or equivalent education 2) professional experience that is assessed in relation to the doctoral education area, as well as 3) the necessary language skills in English, both written and oral knowledge is meant. Assessment of these skills is done by presenting an intended doctoral student research plan in English before the current supervisor and the department's doctoral education group.
