This is a full-time, open-ended post starting on 1 January 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The appointment will be in any area of Mathematical Analysis. Applicants for the post should have a record of or potential to produce research that reaches the highest standards of excellence in terms of originality, significance and rigour in Mathematics. S/he should have the ability to deliver high-quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. S/he will also be expected to take a full part in the life of the School, including administrative duties. Candidates must have a PhD in Mathematics or a closely related discipline. The new appointment will be within the Mathematical Analysis group, which currently has eleven regular faculty members, one Emeritus, one Marie Curie Fellow and two postdocs, with two further open postdoc positions. This makes Cardiff one of the larger analysis groups in the UK.
The interests of the group include:
asymptotic and variational methods for nonlinear PDEs, in particular homogenisation; combinatorial and analytic number theory, and special functions;
geometric and stochastic partial differential equations; kinetic theory of PDEs;
spectral theory and quantum mechanics;
applications including inverse problems, medical genetics and scaling limits for particle system. We will give serious consideration to outstanding candidates in any area of mathematical analysis. Ideal candidates will bring an interesting new direction to the group and will also be able to interact scientifically with our existing members.
The group holds weekly seminars with speakers from the UK and abroad, and frequently organises international conferences and programmes. We also have a regular stream of international visitors, which have included recent Fields Medallists and ICM speakers.

Research To conduct research within Mathematics and contribute to the overall research performance of the School and University by the production of measurable outputs including bidding for funding, publishing in international academic journals and conferences, development of impact case studies, and the recruitment and supervision of postgraduate research students. To develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research including research funding proposals. To give conference/seminar papers at a local, national and international level To participate in School research activities.
Teaching To design and deliver high quality teaching programmes for courses and contribute to module development as part of a module team. To carry out other forms of scholarship including work associated with examinations (setting and marking paper and providing constructive feedback to students), administration, participation in committee work, and the pastoral care of students of Cardiff University To inspire undergraduate and postgraduate students under the guidance of a mentor / module leader and develop skills in assessment methods and in providing constructive feedback to students. To supervise the work of students including the supervision of Undergraduate and Master’s students and the co-supervision of PGR’s. To act as a Personal Tutor and provide pastoral support to students
Other To engage effectively with professional institutions, other academic institutions etc., nationally and internationally to raise awareness of the School’s profile, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities.
