Assistant Professor of Statistics

Tenure-track Assistant Professor of Statistics, to begin August 24, 2020.  We are seeking a dynamic individual committed to undergraduate teaching and guiding students interested in statistics-related careers.


Minimum / Required

  • PhD in statistics required by August 2020 (all areas of statistical expertise will be considered)

Highly Desired

  • Evidence of teaching ability
  • Strong interest in teaching undergraduate courses
  • Strong interest in supporting students pursuing a career in Actuarial Science and/or Data Science
  • Interest in involving undergraduate students in research


Teach an average of 12 credit hours of coursework each semester in lower and upper level courses in statistics and occasionally lower-level courses in mathematics. Involvement in curriculum development; research and scholarly activity; academic advisement; course and program assessment of student learning; and service to the department and the university are expected along with other duties as assigned by the department chair.


The Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Department has 25 full-time members, a strong tradition of excellence in teaching, and a growing program of scholarship and research in mathematics, computer science, statistics, and related areas. The department received the 2008 University of Wisconsin System Regents Teaching Excellence Award for Academic Departments and Programs. The department is committed to student-centered and technology-enhanced instruction. Technology usage includes students working on laptops in the classroom, web enhancements (e.g., course management and on-line homework systems), and interactive distance education courses. Faculty members involve undergraduate students in research and the department has hosted an NSF-sponsored REU site in Mathematics in the past. For several years, the department has actively contributed to Wisconsin Science Olympiad, and in May of 2016, UW-Stout hosted the National Science Olympiad.

The department offers all the core courses necessary for the Applied Mathematics and Computer Science (~155 students) and Computer Science (~320 students) programs as well as coursework supporting five Engineering programs (~952 students). There is a long-standing concentration in Actuarial Science available under the Applied Mathematics and Computer Science program. The department also provides service courses (in all three disciplines: statistics, mathematics, and computer science) for the numerous programs within the university.  Typical statistics class size is about 35 students. The department also has a Master's Degree in Industrial and Applied Mathematics.   Some opportunities for teaching statistics to graduate students (both from the Master's in Industrial & Applied Math and from several other programs) will be available occasionally.

Menomonie, Wisconsin, is a town of 16,000 located in the beautiful Chippewa River Valley, 25 miles west of Eau Claire and 60 miles east of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul.
