The Department of
Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Southern Maine (USM) invites
applications for a tenure-track position in mathematics in the areas of
analysis, algebra, topology, or geometry at the rank of Assistant Professor to
begin September 2020. The University of Southern Maine is a member of the University
of Maine System with campuses in Gorham, Lewiston-Auburn, and Portland, Maine. The Department of
Mathematics and Statistics offers a BA in Mathematics and an MS in Statistics
degrees in programs designed to emphasize student exploration of these disciplines
in the context of a broad background of their foundations. Among the three
concentrations we offer as part of our BA major program, pure mathematics,
applied mathematics/operations research, and statistics, the department offers
a secondary education track for teacher certification and the 4+1 accelerated
statistics program culminating in a master’s degree. The successful
candidate will have demonstrated the promise of continued growth as a
mathematician and the capacity to be productive in research while contributing
toward the department’s objectives for teaching, scholarship, and
mentorship. Candidates should exhibit a
desire to seek excellence in their teaching and a dedication to their research
programs along with a commitment to fostering a welcoming learning community
and environment for promoting student achievement. We seek candidates
interested in mentoring and teaching our undergraduate students who are diverse
in many dimensions, including first-generation college students, ethnic and
racial minorities, low-income students, women, and LGBTQ students. Moreover,
the candidates we seek would attempt to obtain external research funding to
support their research activities while maintaining active collaborations and
publication record. Portland is Maine’s
most populous city and the economic and cultural center of the state with a
variety of musical, culinary, and artistic venues. As a coastal New England
city in the proximity of a two hour drive to interior lakes and mountains and,
otherwise, to the Boston urban center, Portland offers the accessibility of a
low crime-rate city with the opportunities for both natural and cultural
exploration. Gorham is 10 miles from downtown Portland in the midst of scenic
countryside. Lewiston-Auburn is located 30 minutes north of Portland and midway

a doctoral degree in mathematics in the areas of analysis, algebra, topology,
or geometry by the time of appointment. Preferred Qualifications Prior experience in
teaching mathematics at the college level, including the implementing of
teaching strategies that complement myriad student learning styles in the
in-person and online forums, is preferred. Responsibilities The successful
candidate will be expected to teach a variety of mathematics courses (9 credit
hours per semester), including some in the area of the candidate’s area of
expertise, be productive in mathematical research, participate in service to
the department, college, and university, including curriculum development and
